Library basics

Search, sort, filter, and switch between grid and list views.

The library holds every PDF you’ve added to Bookil. This page covers the controls you use to find a book and the actions you can take on one or many books at once.

The search field is at the top of the library. Type any part of a file name to filter the list. Search is case-insensitive and matches anywhere in the name. The search term is remembered when you switch between collections or close the app.

When no PDF matches, Bookil shows “No matching PDFs” with a hint to change your search or filters.

Sort

Tap the Sort menu to choose how books are ordered:

  • Recent — most recently opened first.
  • Title — alphabetical by file name.
  • Progress — least-read first.

Ties are broken by title. If a book has never been opened, “Recent” falls back to when it was last modified or added.

Filter

The filter row sits below the search field. Tap a pill to filter by reading state:

  • All — every book in the current scope.
  • Unread — books you haven’t opened.
  • Reading — books you’ve started but not finished.
  • Read — books you’ve reached the last page of.

The count next to each pill shows how many books match.

Grid or list

Use the toggle on the right of the filter row to switch between Grid and List:

  • Grid — covers with the title underneath. The number of columns adjusts to the container width — 2 columns on iPhone in portrait, more on iPad in full screen.
  • List — small cover, title, and a progress bar with status text.

Your choice is remembered.

Actions on a single book

Long-press a book to open its context menu:

  • Mark as Read / Mark as Unread — toggle the reading state.
  • Collections — add the book to a collection or remove it from one. A checkmark shows which collections it already belongs to.
  • File Info — open the file-info sheet with PDF metadata and reading log.
  • Share — open the share sheet with the PDF file.
  • Regenerate Thumbnail — rebuild the cover if it looks wrong.
  • Remove from Device — delete the PDF file from your device. The reading history is kept.

Select many books

Tap Select in the search row to enter selection mode.

  • Tap any book to toggle its selection.
  • Use Select All or Deselect All in the header. These only act on books currently visible after the search and filter.
  • The action bar at the bottom shows three buttons:
    • Read / Unread — mark every selected book.
    • Collections — add every selected book to a collection.
    • Remove — delete every selected book from the device.

Tap Done to leave selection mode.

Scope

The library always shows one scope at a time, chosen from the sidebar:

  • All Books — every book in your library, except books in a locked private collection.
  • Unfiled — books that don’t belong to any collection.
  • A specific collection — books in that collection.

Books in a locked private collection don’t appear in All Books, Unfiled, or search. They’re only visible after you unlock the collection. See Private collections.

Empty states

  • Library is Empty — you haven’t added any PDFs yet. Tap Add PDF to get started.
  • No Matching PDFs — your search or filter is hiding everything. Change the search term or pick a different filter.
